Shaukat Khan Continues to Inspire NCA Students

by Khanum

The wonderful world of Shaukat Khan is filled with Holiday cruising adventures, Awareness Campaigns and fantastic art works. He doesn’t just write travelogues telling interesting stories about every place he visits but also paints such fantastic things. Have a look at the picture below. This was painted by him during his Save The Disappearing Flora & fauna Of Rainforest campaign.

I admire his work, especially the one he put on Saatchi Online. Do check it out. There’s a painting by the name, Fantasy Butterfly. It’s so unique and colorful! Simply splendid work.

On Wednesday, He gave a marvelous presentation on Ship Cruising before leaving Pakistan. Did I mention he’s settled in UK?

The event started off with a slide show on Flora and Fauna campaign and then escalated with his presentation on Cruising Holidays. All the students just simply loved the idea of cruising  and pictures from all over the world that he been to on ship. Every eye was mesmerized, every student had his breath taken away. I was given the task to photograph the event but even I was so taken away with the presentation on a big screen that I stopped clicking my camera for awhile.

Here are some of the pictures from the presentation day.10396522_854766164551664_1279463371_n1 10405897_854765447885069_1143061343_n 10374274_854765861218361_1725397830_n1

La Tour Eiffel et moi – Take 2

by Khanum

Wait–wait! Before you jump to the wrong conclusion let me just break the news to you all.

YES!!! I am obsessing over Eiffel Tower alot but no I am not in love with any French guy to come to this point of insanity. I am simply having awesome free time at hand and a blessed season to do anything I like and want. My mind is BOOMING with creativity! And out of the many things that I am doing these days for fun, this tops the list.

Ya-ha-hoo! I am drawing and creating my honest version of art. Mum thinks I’m dying over La Eiffel tower, trying to get the sketching right but I think am just trying to live my dream of travelling the world and city of lights through these sketches, that I do daily. I cant explain in words, the joy I feel inside while doodling. Its like I am actually there, the details of the picture, the angles, the turns, the measure, the colors. It all makes me feel like I know this place. Like I am there. Alive and kicking!

Ahh! I wish I get to travel the whole  world Universe. Till then, Let’s enjoy this newly found hobby.

I created this miniature Eiffel Tower first thing in the morning. Image (5) - Copy

Then I ruined it accidentally by introducing colors in the picture : ( I just wanted to look it elegant but I forgot I am good at bizarre art only. Elegant and neat sketching is not my cup of tea with biscuits made of chocolate.

IMAG0078

I went ahead and classically ruined the piece more. Giving it multiple dimensions.  Artist’s mind, you know.

And then I did the most amazing thing. I actually created something good out of the sketch of sole structure. Thankfully, I had scanned the sketch of the miniature Tower before using water colors on it. So After epic-lly failing at color scheme. I transformed my Eiffel Tower sketch with a bit of digital magic using Pic Monkey.

Tada! I created this !!!!!

PicMonkey Collage2

Amazing, isn’t it!  So amazing. Alhamdulillah! The way we can play with sketches using software and the way we can learn to create more new things and grow more in the field of arts. Its amazing. I am actually personally in love with this version of the Eiffel Tower. I wanted to add something more but then could only find these birds cum chicks to settle on the trees.

I feel like I can turn it into a post card – both digital and print form – with some extra doodling. What do you guys think?

Oui?

Eiffel Tower and me

by Khanum

Minus the tensions, It’s a lovely day. Rain is pouring down. I’m loving the weather. And I have grown fond of drawing.  I love. Love. Love drawing things now to ruin the perfect architectures with my  tilting lines. Here’s my first ever sketch of Eiffel Tower. And I am kinda proud of it you know–given the case history of horrible sketching of mine.

Please ignore the top antenna thing which is absent. I ran out of paper space for that. Enjoy the rest of the structure. It was pretty technical but easy to draw. The hardest part was to sketch straight lines here.  Pray I get better at it.

However, the really great progress has been on my hand writing. It has got slightly better or should I say , “READ-ABLE!”

And I had to use picture monkey to draw some digital hearts and fireworks with this.

Typically, Paris-ish.

Demons and Angels within

by Khanum

It’s About time now, I posted something new.

Something about the colors I have been showing recently. On canvas.

download (2)

Last few months have been really hectic for me. I wanted to relax, take a break and paint anything. Just anything to know colors. But tough routine wouldn’t let me concentrate on anything other than work. That routine is over now, I have few months to live for myself until the busy days come back to haunt me again. I can paint. But despite all that, I am unable to do so.Why? Because maybe the perfect time for me to paint was during the most maniac days of mine.

The bizarre abstract piece above, is what I created during the most mad busy days of my life. As a therapy you can say. I was tired and hell taken away with everything that I decided to take a few minutes break. I didn’t know what I wanted to draw. I am not really good with colors , I can’t draw a straight line. But despite all that, I wanted to do it. After spending 30 mins with ridiculously not so vibrant art–the type that doesn’t make sense, I got back to my work.

And today when I am really free to do anything, totally relaxed, not under any stress. I realized something. I can’t do it.

Creativity has a time of its own. It doesn’t demand leisure time. It demands you. You– your inner demons awaken and to be willing to come out. If Your mind is racing with anything mad. It is good enough to perform. Art or no art, Scanning this work, looking it close up now after throwing it away at first, I realized I actually like the magnified view of the brush strokes. I don’t know, it maybe ugly but I’m in love with this beautiful black demon running ahead, engulfing everything. Killing! showing no mercy! But colors are still blooming out. Everything is in a recycling order in this universe, isn’t it. What a beautiful chaos it is.

They say art therapy speaks a lot about the person’s mind. I wonder what does it say about mine.

Imma Photo Mazdoor! Let’s shoot!

by Khanum

10363311_854818197879794_1952129318_o

Sunday Morning, 22nd of December came with a refreshing promise for me. A Promise for Adventure.

I, along with a bunch of photographers and a great friend, (Gulabo) embarked on a cold journey towards Rana Resort. Approximately 76km away from Lahore, This beautiful place has 200 acres of thick bamboo jungle. Lush green beauty everywhere! And what I loved about this place the most was the silence and calm. Minus the bizarre people there and you have a perfect peaceful spot for walk and photography! Every color I noticed somehow seemed either green or brown to me. It felt like a combination of cold meeting warmth.

Speaking of warmth,  Let me mention, to get ourselves charged up for fatigue and hard work ahead, We made a quick stop  at some dhabba first for tea. (Uh- It turned out to be very meethi.)  And then Half way there,I realized I should have listened to my mum and wore high-neck underneath my sweater. It was damn cold.

Anyhow, after that we stopped at Head Baloki. Did snap snap and then Upon reaching the Resort after like 10 minutes or something, I for one became very displeased with the high pitched bizarre songs being played in the park or garden. Whatever it was. But as we moved further and towards the bamboo jungle, the sounds of civilization began to fade away somewhere in the background. Before us, was a calm beautiful jungle, waiting–and  inviting!

Kudos to Photo Mazdoor! It’s time that it finally got mentioned by me.

The Photowalk was organized by Photo Mazdoor in collaboration with Nikon! From transport expenses to refreshment and lunch, everything was included in registration fee Rs 1050 only. Isn’t it great? It’s my 2nd photowalk with Photo Mazdoor. The first being to Qila Rohtas! What an amazing and unforgettable day that was. Khanum almost fainted.

Yup, she did. No joke.

But thanks to the medical arrangements done by Photo Mazdoor, A doctor was among us on the bus at that time. She gave me on the spot treatment and I survived. Later on another brave photographer dropped almost dead in the bus on the way back from Qila Rohtas in Summers. But Again , thanks to the doctor with us, He was given drip and treatment immediately. The rest is history. All the photographers, work like soldiers on the field. They tirelessly shoot at any spot given and voila! The following photographs would be witness to it– how much hard work the photo mazdoors put in for the sake of photography. I hope you enjoy my few humble shots presented on this blog out of the many that I captured. As for the camera: I was fortunate enough to use a Nikon D7100 that I borrowed on the spot from the Organizer. The editing is done on Lightroom 5.2. An excellent software I must say. Its my first time using it and am already in love with this one. The photography presented is original work of Pervisha Khan.  but I am humbly requesting to people who love to steal from my blog that please! Have haya this time and do not steal it. Thank you.

I don’t know what is it about the above picture. The colors or the way it holds stagnant pond! silence and calm. I love it. I simply love it. That’s why you can say am an abnormal photographer.

Moving on, to the lunch we had. Delicious chicken prepared by the organizer themselves. NO JOKE!

And Now, some shots from the wild life inside the Resort.

And this is so far the last one am going to share. More may follow.

You must have noticed Almost every shot is taken vertically. Well, thats a kind of my thing. I somehow find things more pretty in vertical shots. Or perhaps its a bug in my head for vertical composing.

Anyhow, I hope you visit Photo Mazdoor and if you’re a photographer based in Lahore ,do subscribe to them. And since we are on the topic of photography, Check out Meem Noon Fotos page on Facebook as well. Its stunning work. Especially this picture I recently admired alot.

Coming Up next !

Today I attended a wedding at Church. My friend’s wedding. It was beautiful as I tweeted earlier that no matter where a marriage takes place, or who gets married, A Muslim or a Christian: A wedding is a Wedding. Quite a touching affair.

Too excited to relax first and have tea, I have already posted some glimpses of the ceremony at my facebook but unfortunately due to my busy schedule ahead and hectic day fatigue, I won’t be editing and posting the ceremony pictures for now. But in next post, in shaa Allah.

Walaikum salam! & Toodles!

A word on ‘Baran’

by Khanum

I am writing this post on filmmaking after quite a long time now , probably 2 years, cause I had taken break from this creative side. However, my passion for it never died. Therefore I decided after a long solace that I will return to it one more time.

I saw Baran movie years back at a screening hall with my friends at University. It was a film festival and we were shown outstanding and worth pondering feature films from Korea, Iran and China.

‘The Way Home’ by korean industry won the heart. As for Iran, they pretty much stole the show.

I had never watched iranian cinema before that screening , nor was I into studying filmmaking at that time. Buh oh boy! The storylines and the execution patterns of Iranian cinema are worth praising. We watched 3 Iranian movies altogether, Leila, Children of Heaven and Baran.

‘Children of Heaven’ is a legend in itself. A movie based on a pair of shoes. How could the writer come up with this brilliant idea haan ? 😀 Amazing!

Persian title of the Movie is ‘Bacha-e-Asmaan’. It is an outstanding movie, outstanding example of child stars and incredible yet simple story line by Majid Majidi. Yes, the same well known Iranian Film Director that visited National College of Arts, Lahore few years back.

I have simple appreciation for that movie, but for Baran, I am out of words. There’s no thish thas robots fighting, no superficial or artificial graphics affect. Its pure inspiration and I would admit here, if anything , any film industry inspires me to today to produce something good, halal and simple charming short films, its Iranian cinema. Top list inspiration: Baran.

Here’s a clip I watched while working on my ideas, and refresh my memory.

My review for this is again simple one. Worth Watching.

Even if you have simply zero know-how of technical things of filmmaking like I do, you will still end up enjoying this immensely given the fact that you have ‘class and simple taste’. Notice how the Director plays with the natural sounds in the scene. The extreme close up for extreme registration of emotion and creating depth in the feeling. Symbolism is everywhere.

If you like the clip, I hope you end up watching the full movie. And yes, there are no item songs in this movie. If you are one of those people – then don’t watch.

Believe it or not, I can actually draw.

by Khanum

All my childhood I was sure I am decent if not awesome at drawing. Fast forward few years and in College I was told, ‘Yu suck!’ It’s true..I really suck at drawing despite of having artistic blood in my veins from my mother’s side. She draws and paints. My Uncle draws and paints. And  I simply shoot!

But one day, a voice inside my head urged me to test my skills. “Yu  come from an artistic family  yu Loser”

“Do I?’ I asked the Heavenly voice , that just insulted me.

“Yes, of course you mummy! Go! Make your mother proud and save this world.”

So I applied for a degree in the Arts department. Voala! They immediately kicked me out.  After that , its been 5 years that heavenly voice didn’t contact me again , until recently it spoke to me while I watched Manga Anime. Yes. That’s right. I am a Manga person. I said enough is enough to myself and from that day on,  These are the miracles that I produced in order to make my Family proud.

This is the Image I adore the most. I think the lines are pretty decent. But I did mess up his hair on the top though. My mother thinks he was a bald coot I gave him a wig. :o. I guess even that’s some skill!

And this image here is my pride. All the other images were my attempt to get my lines straight. I had an image that I copied to perfect myself. However , this Bad boy here is my own creation without any COPY! I was watching manga anime and a very cute character inspired. Here I messed up again. The real boy was a cute one. I turned him into a little pirate. Again my mother thinks I have a natual talent at these things 😀 Now I don’t intend to continue to draw faces. It’s forbidden in our religion. I just wanted to prove to my family and that heavenly voice, “Yup! I can do it!’ And Now I must say someone should call that Department head and tell her what an asset she lost! I don’t draw that well. ‘Can’t draw wont draw no painting has always been my slogan but c’mon. Don’t all those artists call the ‘messed up’ versions of their paintings Abstract art?  😮
