My Perfect little stroll in the morning :s

by Khanum

5:30 am in the morning. I step out of my room stretching –  it’s time for a morning stroll.  The fajr prayer is long being prayed , sleep is no where near my eyes. A walk seemed like a pretty good idea.

Gladly I walk by the rooms. I can hear some bears snoring in the background. That, of course, is my Uncle from the zoo.  I’m in the middle of the way, not quite there in the pretty little courytard that I begin to plan what I’m going to do in the next few minutes.

“This and this and that…and that too. And Oh I have to oil my Rapunzel hair first”, A train of thoughts start running my brain. But By the moment I’m there, I’m already changing my mind to run back to my room and grab the bloody camera.

I stood in the little lawn mesmerized by the serenity of the scene. Cool breeze, grey sky, the birds chirping in the background. The Tip-Tip the tap-tap music of the water playing in proximity. Probably some tap leakage. .But  oh Boy! What an awesome Morning!

Habitually I looked up at the sky to search fr the white ball of Moon. Thanks to the Heavens, it was there. Dim , covered under the blanket of grey clouds but it was there. It looked like someone had taken a half bite out of it.  But it looked perfect enough to shoot. I quickly realized,   the idea of oiling my hair at this hour was utterly ridiculous . The absurdity of it! I ran back to my room immediately  only to find my camera out of battery.

The desperation of the hour, how can I ever explain it? It seemed like as if I looked for the food and not for the new battery.I ran frantically from point A to point B in my small square room – only to reach point C for nothing. The hilarity , I could not even  find the battery charger.

I glanced at the clock. It lolled 5:40 at me. O teri! I slipped here and there again. It could not get any more worse, I just knew.

I find the charger atlast. Finally give 2 minutes life to the battery. Put on a big smile , yay-ing and cheering all the way  back to the courtyard, hoping to do awesome moon photography.

But I find nothing there , except a pair of birds, apparently smooching.

Long gone the moon, long gone the winds. I finally decide to oil my hair. What a perfect little stroll in the morning!

My Muslim Brother…And my photography syndrome!

by Khanum

It’s another interesting day of Ramadan at home. One that is about to come to an end. Just few more minutes to go before we break our fast with the Call to prayer. Mum busy in the kitchen. Family set on table, praying. I stopped by to post few photos I took earlier today at home.

I was lucky to get a hold of my cousin brother while  performing his worship duties. Since It’s a rule for Men in Islam to offer their 5 times prayers in Masjid. it’s a rare sight at home to see any male member (either young or old) to be praying at house. This cousin of mine – after praying Jumu’ah in Masjid – probably decided to do some more worship at home. Such a noble soul these days. I luckily was free loaded with FUJIFILM. And you know there’s a saying, Where’s there’s Khanum with a camera, there’s a way!

here I was caught with my camera! hence:  He went shy…..

The last one I admit was hard to get. I had to ask him to sit properly. He would complaint. Then my mother in the background would say, ‘She’s the photographer of the house. Obey!’ hence, The Muslim Brother photography mission successful.

Showcasing : The Best Photography of Nadia Masood

by Khanum

Deserts of Arabia – For the category “Nothing & Everything”

“There’s nothing in the desert that could immediately interest a person; in fact, deserts are often used to symbol barrenness.  It’s dry, empty, hot, infertile. But for some people, the desert is everything – their home, livelihood, and identity.”

The flamingos – For the category “I love to photograph”

“I have discovered that I love photographing animals and birds more that human beings. Animals are more challenging; they do not care about the photographer. And they don’t complain or whine 😉 ”  – Nadia Masood.

Few days ago, I announced an online photography event – contest – mainly for my blogger friends and others who love to photograph. But sadly, due to reasons which are still unknown to me, few of my blogger friends couldn’t prticipate and went missing. Other non-blogger people that I know had the tragedy of examz which prevented them from this epic contest. Now , in order to put all of you who did not dare enter the contest to shame, I feel proud and humbled to announce the sole participant and Winner of the event: Nadia Masood.
This showcase on my blog is a little act of my appreciation for your photography. I now award you with one of my self created awards.

I promised a personal gift from my side to the winner. Insha Allah, you’ll receive it soon – if i succeed in my mission in Turkey. 🙂 Have a nice day.

Third Eye Competition ! Get Your Cameras Ready Photographers!

by Khanum

It’s fun. It’s exciting & it’s one of the dynamic things my word press buddies, especially Nadia loves to do.  And since none of you could come up with an event as such, I decided to take the reins in my own hands and Go Yahoo!

Or Yeeha, whatever it is!

If you have the love to photograph, heart to display your work and mind to bet on it, why not go for a healthy competition among photography lovers?!

Don’t think twice, just Sign up for this competition.

Grab your cameras, challenge yourself. Aim, Frame and  Shoot!

Themes for the photography are divided into 4 categories. Each participant must submit 1 best shot in at least 2 categories. Maximum number is 4. If you don’t want to go for more than 2 themes, It’s alright. Just make sure you choose your two categories well.

In case the participant fails to submit his photograph for his second theme, his previous submission for the first category would be automatically cancelled.

The Themes/Categories are:

1)  Product Photography

2)  Third Eye

3)  Nothing & Everything

4) I love to Photograph

Now before you get confused, which I am sure you already are, let me elaborate the ideas.

In the first category, you are supposed to photograph a product, may it be a milk bottle, canon camera or even a mug of coffee. Your aim would be to perform the best product photography ever. If The picture sells well, so will the product. Got it?

In 2nd Category, The theme is ‘Third Eye’. It’s about being creative. It’s about Your imagination. Set an environment, give the parrot, rainbow wings.. It’s upto you. The photograph must have the element of creativity.

The last category is definitely the most anticipated one by me. It’s about photography above your own level. The theme is combining the two opposites, ‘Nothing & Everything’ together. Your photograph must convey both the meanings in one single shot. It’s not like they don’t have something in common. the word ‘thing’ is what makes them a couple. Only the most daring one would think choosing this option.

4th category is really very simple. Just submit your best shot of anything.

Display details: Once you submit your shots and the contest day arrives, your pictures would be displayed on this blog. You can then let your friends have the link to the page and ask them to comment on the pictures. The more you spread the word about contest, the more they get to know your work.

Judgement Criteria: 10% marks for Viewer’s likes. 10% marks from my side. 10% marks on the Caption and remaining 70%, the entire chunk for your Talent at photography.

So there we go! All the best!!!

Sign up deadline: 30th June, 2011.

Shot Submission Deadline with your Bio:    (Final Date yet to be decided. Tentative date: 6th July)

~ Golden Diary of my Arabian Days & Nights ~ Page 1

by Khanum

The story of it  goes somewhere deeper.

Red fine prayer rug, with golden gleaming borders. This is the first reflection that comes to my mind whenever and where ever I think about the journey I made in 2007.

It was the kingdom of Saudia Arabia. The land of the Arabs. With days as warm as the sun and the nights as soothing as the moon and silver. Where neither the earth is fertile, nor the sky is kind to pour down water. But prosperity and wealth still manages to grow stronger and stronger.

In such land of strange wonders and marvels, I lost my heart to a prayer rug.

A shop, the most beautiful and most cultured, and a brown complexion owner, the most unkind and totally opposite in comparison – somehow reserve a special place in my memories.

The background of the shop , the bazaar I walked for days and nights, not less than 5 times a day are also the same vivid collection in my remembrance but the next immediate sketch that my mind always draws with its memory.. is again always associated with that prayer rug.

Lament and compunction…

We had a villain standing between me and my lovely rug…My mother, the budget police and that seller: the unkind fellow as I have already mentioned.

Remorse was: I couldn’t buy that pretty rug that still shines in my head, seldom.

Didn’t I tell you people, the story of it goes somewhere way deeper?!

I felt tranquility in that moment. I heard the man say words I could not comprehend, but it didn’t matter. The rug was the lone centre of my attention. My eyes feasted over its magnificence, the hands felt its softness. It chanted to me words one could never listen. It made me smile and wonder like no other.

Such shop and such prayer mat are hard to encounter, so they are welcome to live in my memory as long as I be in this world.

I like to imagine I will go back one day. Free it from that seller’s possession. I picture my out-of-reach happy ending with it like that every so often.

Me…holding that prayer rug…praying upon it.

My Red fine prayer mat…with golden gleaming borders.

And Here is the Last image my camera could process. The light is almost dim now. Only a shadow remains – that too , fading away slowly.
